"Fuck all the pop song puppy love bullshit. Your heart skipping a beat isn't love, it's cardiac arrhythmia. It's not about shortness of breath, either, or how turned on you get or whether you tell yourself you'd throw yourself in front of a bus for her or whatever. You can convince yourself of a lot about how you feel and what you would do in exchange for regular oral sex.

Love is when she drives you insane sometimes. And I don't mean merely "aggravating" or "annoying," I mean flat-out fucking in. Sane. And in a way nobody else can do it in a million years. She'll drive you to the point where you'd gouge out your own eyeball with a melon baller or smack your scrotum a half-dozen times with a ball peen hammer if it means you can be done with this conversation. She'll make you want to chew your own arm off to get out of talking about this. And I don't care how many fucking times you've had this conversation, each time, you know you'll have it again:

Her: I thought you turned the heat on.
You: I did.
Her: Well, I'm still cold. Are you sure you did it right?
You: Yes, I'm pretty sure I know how to turn on a thermostat.
Her: 'Cause you know you have to flip the switch to "heat" and....
You: Honey! I know! How to turn on! A thermostat! I went to college
for it and everything.
Her: Well, I don't feel any heat blowing in here.
You: I know. I think you broke the thermostat again.
Her: I didn't break it.
You: Yes, you did, you put that halogen lamp right next to it again.
Her: That doesn't do anything.
You: Yes, it does.
Her: I thought you fixed it?
You: I did fix it, and you broke it again.
Her: Are you sure you fixed it right?
You: Yes, goddammit, I fixed it right.
Her: How do you know you fixed it?
You: 'Cause it worked when I fixed it!
Her: Well, it's not working now.
You: 'Cause you broke it again!
Her: How'd I break it?
You: You put the goddamn, fucking lamp next to it!
Her: I don't see why a lamp would break a thermostat.
You: OK. I'm going to explain this. One more time. Slowly. Thermostats have a coil inside them that expands and contracts based on the temperature. This is how they know when it is hotter than the setting of the A/C, so it can cool the room off, or colder than the setting of the heating, so it can heat the room up. Halogen lamps generate heat. Halogen lamps generate a lot of heat. That's why you burn your fingers when you touch the bulbs after they've been on for a while. So when you put a halogen lamp next to a thermostat, it causes the coil to keep expanding and expanding and expanding past the point it's intended to expand. This makes the thermostat think it's really, really hot all the time, and it makes the coil less sensitive in the future, and it'll eventually break the coil so I'll have to replace the thermostat.
Her: That doesn't sound right.
You: Trust me. It's right.
Her: How do you know?
You: BECAUSE I TOOK SIXTH GRADE FUCKING PHYSICS, OK?!
Her: Well, I don't think they should make thermostats that can be broken by something little like a lamp.
You: Fine. Don't think that. Write a letter to the manufacturers. Write a letter to universities and tell them to build a better thermostat. I don't fucking care. But that's how they make them. That's why I keep moving the lamp, that's why I keep telling you not to put it back to the right of the bookcase, that's why I've had to fix the thermostat four fucking times now. Stop! Putting! The lamp! Right! Next! To the thermostat!
Her: But on the other side of the bookcase, the front of the hallway is dark, and I can't see inside my gift closet.
You: Well, you can turn on the hall light to go through your gift closet, or you can sit here and be cold! Your choice, honey!
Her: ?
You: ??
Her: :O
You: :|
Her: I don't think you fixed the thermostat right.
You: GOD-MOTHERFUCKING-DAMMIT, I'M GOING TO FIX THAT MOTHERFUCKING THERMOSTAT TOMORROW, AND I SWEAR TO MOTHERFUCKING CHRIST IF YOU PUT THE LAMP NEAR THE THERMOSTAT AGAIN, I WILL SMASH IT TO A MILLION FUCKING PIECES AND SHOVE THEM DOWN YOUR GODDAMN THROAT!!! MOTHERFUCK ME, JESUS!!!!!!

And if the seventh time you have that conversation, knowing full well there will be an eighth time, you'd still rather have that conversation again than imagine a world she's not in, you're in love.

Especially if you do fix that thermostat... again... the next day, and not just so she'll shut up about it, but because you really don't want her to be cold anymore."

Se eu te der nada...

Creio que não se pode dizer que dar implica necessariamente receber, pois isso não acontece para todos; não se pode dizer que é um direito universal sem que se aplique a todos e como tal não sucede, não o é. Se eu, no entanto, possuisse esse direito, tu também o possuirias e esse direito só existiria na medida que eu possa cumprir o meu dever de respeitá-lo e tu também.
A teoria de reciprocidade fundamenta-se essencialmente na teoria cristã: há uma recompensa para aquele que dá/deu. Ora, com o passar da inexistência de um tempo, da (des)evolução das culturas e óbvias reflexões nas mentalidades, o dar passou de um prazer a algo materialista e obrigatório a fim de não parecer mal, deixando os pequenos gestos descuidados e desprendidos de valor interior. Dar como lembrança, lembrança do que aconteceu e do que nunca existiu. A vida é preenchida de memórias que construímos, reais ou imaginárias, e nos transformam naquilo que somos. Dar e receber fornece memórias e emoções, define relacionamentos, constrói uma vida.
Se não recebes, ninguém se lembra de ti. Na base dos relacionamentos encontra-se a troca sem interesses secundários, com abundância de respeito e carinho pelo outro: o prazer de dar, a combinação perfeita. Todo o tipo de relacionamento se estabelece numa troca. Receber sem dar apenas indica que esse gesto não teve qualquer valor para nós, que as necessidades dessa pessoa não são importantes como as nossas, para nós, e isso leva ao afastamento do outro. Cada vez que colocamos alguém à nossa frente, estamos a mostrar as nossas necessidades: é preciso ser humilde e deixar o nosso ego inchado de lado e saber dizer o quanto precisamos dos outros (de ti, de mim). A pessoa a quem damos torna-se necessária e isso significa que a amamos, e amar não é apenas dar, é saber exigir.
Considero-me uma pessoa que gosta naturalmente de dar, é uma delícia dar, mas no outro dia tive necessidade de receber e foi uma sensação estranha em mim. Todos precisamos de receber para nos sentirmos bem, para nos sentirmos nós, para existirmos. Suspeito que quem nega essa necessidade não tem consciência dos seus desejos internos, não respeita o seu próprio ego, a si mesma, não é passível de ser amada. Temos que saber dar, sem esperar receber; mas temos que saber exigir, para continuarmos a ser.

Se um dia te desse uma flor, dirias que era amor.
Se um dia te desse nada, ...

A felicidade exige valentia.

"Posso ter defeitos, viver ansioso e ficar irritado algumas vezes, mas não esqueço de que a minha vida é a maior empresa do mundo e posso evitar que ela vá à falência.
Ser feliz é reconhecer que vale a pena viver apesar de todos os desafios, incompreensões e períodos de crise. Ser feliz é deixar de ser vítima dos problemas e se tornar um autor da sua própria história. É atravessar desertos fora de si, mas ser capaz de encontrar um oásis no recôndito da sua alma. Ser feliz é não ter medo dos próprios sentimentos. É saber falar de si mesmo. É ter coragem para ouvir um "não". É ter segurança para receber uma crítica, mesmo que injusta.

Um-do-li-tá...

Hoje decidi fazer uma nota breve sobre o amor. Para tal recorri à teoria de Sternberg (1986-87) de forma a descrever algumas noções e a deixar-vos reflectir acerca delas. O autor descreve uma teoria com três componentes distintas e ao juntar essas três partes, encontra-se o amor perfeito.

Intimidade: sentimentos de proximidade e união.
Paixão: impulsos que levam ao romance, atracção física, sexualidade e romance.
Decisão e Compromisso: inclui elementos cognitivos que estão envolvidos na tomada de decisão acerca da existência e compromisso potencial a longo-praxo.

Everybody's Free

Ladies and Gentlemen... wear sunscreen.

If I could offer you only one tip for the future, sunscreen would be IT.

The long term benefits of sunscreen have been proved by scientists whereas the rest of my advice has no basis more reliable than my own meandering experience.

I will dispense this advice now.

Enjoy the power and beauty of your youth. Never mind. You will not understand the power and beauty of your youth until they have faded. But trust me, in 20 years you'll look back at photos of yourself and recall in a way you can't grasp now how much possibility lay before you and how fabulous you really looked.

You are NOT as fat as you imagine.

Don't worry about the future; or worry, but know that worrying is as effective as trying to solve an algebra equation by chewing bubblegum. The real troubles in your life are apt to be things that never crossed your worried mind; the kind that blindside you at 4pm on some idle Tuesday.

Do one thing every day that scares you.

Sing.

Don't be reckless with other people's hearts, don't put up with people who are reckless with yours.

Floss.

Don't waste your time on jealousy; sometimes you're ahead, sometimes you're behind. The race is long, and in the end, it's only with yourself.

Remember compliments you receive, forget the insults; if you succeed in doing this, tell me how.

Keep your old love letters, throw away your old bank statements.

Stretch.

Don't feel guilty if you don't know what you want to do with your life. The most interesting people I know didn't know at 22 what they wanted to do with their lives, some of the most interesting 40 year olds I know still don't.

Get plenty of calcium.

Be kind to your knees, you'll miss them when they're gone.

Maybe you'll marry, maybe you won't, maybe you'll have children, maybe you won't, maybe you'll divorce at 40, maybe you'll dance the funky chicken on your 75th wedding anniversary. Whatever you do, don't congratulate yourself too much or berate yourself, either. Your choices are half chance, so are everybody else's. Enjoy your body, use it every way you can. Don't be afraid of it, or what other people think of it, it's the greatest instrument you'll ever own.

Dance. Even if you have nowhere to do it but in your own living room.

Read the directions, even if you don't follow them.

Do NOT read beauty magazines, they will only make you feel ugly.

Get to know your parents, you never know when they'll be gone for good.

Be nice to your siblings; they are your best link to your past and the people most likely to stick with you in the future.

Understand that friends come and go, but for the precious few you should hold on. Work hard to bridge the gaps in geography in lifestyle because the older you get, the more you need the people you knew when you were young.

Live in New York City once, but leave before it makes you hard; live in Northern California once, but leave before it makes you soft.

Travel.

Accept certain inalienable truths, prices will rise, politicians will philander, you too will get old, and when you do you'll fantasize that when you were young prices were reasonable, politicians were noble and children respected their elders.

Respect your elders.

Don't expect anyone else to support you. Maybe you have a trust fund, maybe you'll have a wealthy spouse; but you never know when either one might run out.

Don't mess too much with your hair, or by the time you're 40, it will look 85.

Be careful whose advice you buy, but, be patient with those who supply it. Advice is a form of nostalgia, dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it's worth.

But trust me on the sunscreen.
